Solar Photovoltaics for Large-scale Applications

Overview

For the moment, basic information on photovoltaics and related issues can be found in the microFIT section.

There are several issues that are of relevance specifically for large-scale developments (i.e., larger than 10kW):

  • Installation on flat roofs
    • Slope and racking considerations
    • Methods of attachment and protection against wind (ballasting, anchoring and guy wires)
    • Offset from the roof (avoiding snow accumulation)
    • Roof structural integrity (can it hold the extra weight of panels, racking, ballasting, snow, ice, and wind loads [both upward and downward pressure])
  • Ground-mounted installations
  • Capacity of the grid
  • Approvals issues and timelines

In order to give a general idea of size, 250kW covers a roof of about 40,000 sq ft, or 4,000 sq metres (discussion with Mike Peterman of Ozz Solar, March, 2010).

Price Information

It appeared in March, 2010 that prices for installed systems for flat roofs were running between $5.00 and $6.50/W installed, with the main cost factors being roof remediation that might be needed, connection to the grid, and the size of the system (bigger is usually cheaper).
